National Hedgelaying Society

The National Hedge Laying Society (NHLS) http://www.hedgelaying.org.uk/ was formed in 1978 by a group of enthusiastic hedge layers who feared that the skills of the craft would be lost as a result of the mass destruction of hedges and the lack of interest in training younger people. The society grew rapidly drawing its initial membership from the older generation of skilled craftsman, who entered competitions (Frequently as an addition to a local ploughing match). The hedgerow legislation and the introduction of the agri-environment schemes halted the destruction of hedgerows and the emphasis is now on hedgerow management as part of good agricultural practice.

The NHLS has continued to grow, organising a National Competition annually where over one hundred hedge layers from all over the UK compete. An accreditation scheme has been introduced to maintain the levels of craftsmanship, and by working closely with other organisations such as Natural England and the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England it has been possible to produce DVD's, Leaflets and other educational material to promote hedgerow management skills.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in hedgerows and includes both professional Contractors as well as many amateur members who work on volunteer programmes throughout the countryside. The web page (www.hedgelaying.org.uk) includes a list of contract hedge layers and trainers, along with information on training, competitions and other educational material. Technical advice is also available based on wide ranging practical experience acquired over many years by the members.

The 32nd National Hedge Laying championship will be held on Saturday 23rd October 2010 at Hambleton Peninsular, Rutland Water, Rutland. For further information contact Robin Dale, 01386 700312 or visit http://www.hedgelaying.org.uk/.
