You may well be aware that the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and the Environmentally Sensitive Area scheme (known as the Classic schemes) are not being continued when current agreements expire.
The government has introduced Environmental Stewardship (ES) as its method of encouraging environmental gain on farmland. There are two tiers to ES, Entry Level Stewardship and Higher Level Stewardship.
At FWAG we are concerned that many/some of the environmental benefits gained from 10 years or more of management under the Classic schemes will be lost if agreement holders cannot access the options under the new HLS scheme.
