More than 80% of the UK is made up of countryside.  Some wild areas remain, but most is managed for agriculture, recreation, or nature conservation. Other large areas are located around historic and protected sites or are used for defence purposes.  Agriculture is by far the greatest land use and is a crucial part of our heritage and our future.

Some 60% of food we consume is still produced in the UK. Recently, farm support measures have seen a shift from production-based subsidies to agri-environmental support.

FWAG can help us all to reconnect with the countryside - to make the links between high quality food and a high quality rural landscape and to enable all those with a passion for the countryside to work together to ensure that we make the right choices for the health of the countryside now and in the future.

FWAG was established in 1969 by a group of forward thinking farmers who were concerned about the dramatic loss of habitat and wildlife as a result of the evere increasing intensification of farming methods. It is an independent Registered Charity and FWAG Limited operates throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It assists the people who manage the countryside with environmental management expertise, so food produced in the UK, our countryside and the native wildlife as we know it can be improved and protected for our future generations to enjoy.

A voluntary committee of local farmers supports each group together with representatives from the agriculture industry and environmental sectors to ensure we are farmer led organisations.
