Over 50 farmer members attended the FWAG's AGM at Garden Organic, Ryton on Dunsmore on Wednesday 5 November to hear about the innovative advice packages that FWAG is developing to help farmers through the environmental challenges that lie ahead.
The AGM also gave members the opportunity to welcome FWAG's new chairman, Henry Lucas. Henry, who farms at Pleasance Farm, Kenilworth in Warwickshire has been a former FWAG and NFU county chairman and a long term supporter of FWAG.
Campbell Tweed, former president of the Ulster Farmers Union and UK Chairman of the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, was announced as the new Vice-Chair. Two new Trustees, Sam Blacker from North Yorkshire and Chris Butler from Essex were also elected to the Board of Trustees.
The meeting also bade a fond farewell to retiring Chairwoman, Anne Kelaart who has been national chair for three years. As a token of FWAG's appreciation Anne was presented with a silver and gold brooch from The Steensons, a contemporary jewellery designer based in Northern Ireland.
During the AGM, FWAG's new advisory packages to help farmers tackle the imminent NVZ legislation were unveiled. Designed as a health check, FWAG advisers will be able to help farmers through the myriad of paperwork associated with these regulations to ensure that they are meeting all the requirements on their farm.
FWAG will also be launching its updated nutrient and manure management plans to provide farmers with a practical plan that will help them to maximize the value of the nutrients that will be available to their crops. These plans are tailored to the individual farm and can be easily updated on an annual basis. In these times of record fertilizer prices, they are an essential tool to help farmers to save money.
FWAG is also leading the way in the provision of energy advice to farmers. It has undertaken over 100 CALM audits on farms in England and is also offering comprehensive guidance to farmers to help them mitigate for their greenhouse gas emissions. FWAG also works with a range of delivery partners to ensure that it can offer a one-stop-shop service on all aspects of energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy crops.
Andy Ormiston, FWAG's managing director, commented: "The environment has now become an integral part of all forward thinking farming businesses. I was delighted to see so many of our volunteers present at the AGM and look forward to working with them to promote our increased range of services to the farming community"
